Well, Gildarts is the strongest character in Fairy Tail. The reason he doesn't get much screen time in battles is because then it would always end in a victory. He crushes the ground when he trips, and if he daydreams while on a walk he can accidentally walk through buildings, thus destroying them.

Shanks has exceptional sword skills, and a special ability that (as we know) only Luffy has too.
