My rule is, hair length is as far down as the hair appears in the image.
So that means, even if they "really" have 8 feet of hair, if it's worn up above their ears, they have ear length hair. This is important an an indexing rule. No matter how accurate your guess may be, it worthless if the person searching the character doesn't guess the same hair length. They'll never find the character with ease. But, if instead of guessing, we index all characters with their hair up as ear length, it becomes --- Wait... I can easily change the search criteria to include "Hair Up / Indeterminate". There's easily hundreds of characters already. Should I? As for pig tails or other non-straight hair styles, we simply look for the lowest portion of their hair and make the best guess where it matches up with. Deciding between ear length and neck length .... I often found I disagreed with everyone submitting characters. I guess I'll say neck length can range from: ![]() to ![]() [ Edited Jul 28, 2011 ] |

I think that we should have "hair Up/Indeterminate" for two reasons.
Based on the fact that people search using images they find to look for a specific character. 1.) Character like Haruhi who has more styles (and thus lengths) that the standard might not be the same as the image they are searching with. 2.) More commonly with images from water scenes(bath, spa, ocean, etc) where most characters let their hair down, and inevitability of those type of images (being so screenshot-able) someone is going to find one and search use it and subsequently can not find her. Hair Up / Indeterminate
has been added as Hair Length option #8. ^_^
-update- Think I'll quickly index a few short hair characters to have the new Hair Up / Indeterminate hair type. [ Edited Jul 28, 2011 ] |

Tomorrow if you like, I will go through the first couple hundred female characters, changing their hairstyle to "indeterminate" based on the following criteria.
1.) The characters hair length is obviously affected by the style. 2.) Characters (whether by pre-existing knowledge or images you can "swap" with) has more than one length due to multiple styles and thus needs to be switched to "indeterminate". |

In an attempt to make sure I (and anyone reading this) is on the same page I am posting a few examples of what I think qualify as "indeterminate". I skipped "Past Waist" and started with "To waist" as hairstyles generally decrease length instead of increasing it and so checking "Past Waist" would be fruitless. Rei please point them out and state why they are incorrect if you could so I can get the general feel. I will also include ones I am unsure of.

No.
Changing any those would introduce way too much confusion. Waist Length ![]() chest length ![]() waist length ![]() The evaluation will be the same as usual for all these cases: Where the tip of the hair ends, that's the hair length. The only ones I'd consider for Hair Up / Indeterminate are characters where the hair length is obscured by a hat / cloak / hair accessory or characters with their hair worn up with no ends below their ears. Of the characters I've added, I either added such characters as Ear Length hair, or if I was drunk at the time, I'd add them Past Waist hair based on a liberal guess that if their hair was let down it would be past their waist. Thus I think the highest concentration will be in those two categories. Also a lot of people who uploaded characters made the assumption hair worn up was past waist in length. So, I don't think it would be fruitless at all. ![]() [ Edited Jul 28, 2011 ] |

I think I understand. So a character like this:
![]() Or this: ![]() Also as a note, the one you marked as "To Chest"in the examples I submitted was also found in the "To Waist" department and was submitted by you which is why I thought it fell under the "Indeterminate" category it looking like it belonged in the "To Chest" department based on the rule you gave. Thanks again for the clarification. |

That's sounding about right.
If the hair is clearly bundled up in the back, like the Purple Hair girl, we can safely ignore the strands to the side and index her as Indeterminate. The other example with the hidden face is also perfect. As for her ![]() No guidelines come to mind for what to do in this case that are in use. Possible options: Always round up? Always round down? Assume it's shorter than it looks? Assume it's longer than it looks? I guess for now, both apply. So people should use the Main Search panel to search both possibilities when looking for such a character. It's possible to later on introduce a higher level of accuracy... possibly scoring characters 50% waist length, 50% chest length. Heh, could be rather cool filtering the results using such percentages though. *keeps it in mind for a future update* [ Edited Jul 28, 2011 ] |
