Descended from a long line of Tokyo samurai, Myojin Yahiko is proud of his lineage. However, as a poor orphan, he has to live shamefully as a pickpocket for the Shuei yakuza. One day, Yahiko tries to pick the pocket of a swordsman with red hair and cruciform scar. When the swordsman takes pity on Yahiko and gives him his wallet, Yahiko throws it back in disgust and declares that as the descendant of samurai, he needs no charity from strangers. Later on, Yahiko tells the yakuza that he no longer wants to be their pickpocket. This goes as well as one can imagine it would and Yahiko winds up being beaten up badly. Just as he's about to be killed, the red haired swordsman shows up and saves him. Yahiko is then taken to a kendo dojo and made the first student of Kamiya Kasshin Ryu under Kamiya Kaoru, whom he affectionately refers to as "busu" or "ugly hag." Yahiko proves to be something of a genius and is soon able to mimic some of Kenshings Mitsurugi moves just by watching Kenshin in action. His goal is to someday have a Sakabatou of his own and protect people just like his hero does. |
