If you miss a day, don't worry. You keep your current merit points, and earn another the next day you login. The highest rank is Fleet Admiral. Being the 37th rank, it should take at least 370 days to earn. But the important thing is, YOU CAN EARN IT. :)

I suspect there will be ways to earn bonus merit points in the future. For now at least, the system is time based only.
