Pip is a French mercenary, leader of a group called "The Wild Geese." He and his group are hired by Walter to work for the Hellsing Agency by killing vampires. He is initially very skeptical of the Agency and doesn't believe that vampires are real until Seras Victoria knocks him over with one hand. He is a chain smoker and is rarely seen without a cigarette in his mouth or hand. His tendency to antagonize, tease and offend people has lead to a lot of fighting, particularly with Seras.

In the English translations there is a lot of confusion about his last name. In the manga he is introduced as Bernadette, but his name mysteriously changes to Vernadead for the rest of the series. In the OVA English dub his name sounds like Bernadette, but the subtitles show it to be Bernadotte. Despite all these confusions, Bernadotte is considered his official name.
