Since this thread is comp spec related, could you guys recommend any laptop models to me?
PCs are fine also, as long as they aren't huuuuuge. I don't really know much about the gooey innards of comps, so if you can put me on the right track then i'd appreciate it. My budget will be about $1500? Give or take a little. I'd only be using it for college work, anime, music etc. Space is necessary. Help? [ Edited Dec 10, 2008 ]

for $1500 you could get a pretty good system depending on the features that you want. First I suggest you shop around a bit, get a feel for the market and what you might be able to get in your area. If you don't mind PCs you could always get a little machine. I know that motherboards are getting smaller and smaller lately. Since you don't know much about computers you may want to get a commercial model that's been built already so look at dell, HP, etc. For video, which will probably be the thing that is the most resource-intensive, just about any of the mid-grade computers on up will handle it. One thing that I do recommend you look at is RAM, since that will be one of the deciding factors of how fast your system runs. Anything over 1Gb is good and how much you may need depends on which operating system you will have on it. If you will have Vista on it I recommend at least 2Gb for a smooth running machine. With XP, 1Gb works but more is better, 1.5Gb will probably be more than enough if all you're going to be doing is what you listed.

my secret motive for starting this thread: i built a new desktop today.
Ishikawa, $1500?! for 1/3rd that you could get my system: Intel Core Duo Quad 2.4GHz Q6600 4GB DDR1066 RAM (2x2GB) Asus P5Q MB 500GB S-ATA2 HD Power Supply, Case, CD-ROM Drive, Video, etc were all filled by old parts I had lying around. By as much RAM as you can. Even a minimal install of XP will use 100% of 1GB of RAM, plus 1 - 3GB of virtual memory. These days, I suggest a minimum of 4GB. |

^if I remember right... XP does not support 4Gb of RAM, highest it supports is 3Gb (it was either that or Vista before SP1).
Also, if Ishikawa is looking for a laptop he's got the right idea for an upper-mid-grade machine. If he was looking for a computer with just what he listed a laptop that is between $700 and $1000 will be good enough. With the extra he could buy external hard drives or DVDRs for his space needs. make sure that the ram is DDR3, since the physical differences in the ram would mean that older models will be harder to upgrade. Also, yeah, ram is a good idea.
If you need it now, I'd suggest going with XP, since things will just run easier on it, if its a cheap laptop you might as well go with the system that doesn't eat your resources as much. If you're using it for college, having a laptop you can carry around could be uber useful. take it to class, study together with friends, watch videos in between classes, etc. i only have 512Mb of ram, and I can run video editing software, its not too fast, but its do-able. but in any case, don't get vista if you're only going to get 1Gb of ram. Vista will eat about 800mB just on startup, so you'll need more. Also, when is Windows 7 coming out? It's going to be 64 bit, and everything else will follow after microsoft like sheep, so in half a year or something everything bought before that will be "old" in a sense. If you're able to wait, I'd suggest waiting until then. If you need something now, buy the essentials, and store some cash up for the new operating system. |

Wow.
Well, i will be using it for college work, which i why i think a laptop would be more convenient. So you recommend at least 4GB of RAM and XP, but XP only supports 3GB? Hmm. I can't really wait for the newer operating system, but i could certainly put aside some of my savings for the upgrade. As for brobb355's suggestion. I've seen some reasonably cheap 1TB external hard-drives. But would i actually need that much space? My current comp is literally 'full'. I have thousands of songs :/ Also, although a laptop could be more convenient, would i see more benefits with a PC in terms of 'power' and a better system? Thanks for your help so far. I should be looking to buy when i go away in january. I should be able to get it a little cheaper in HK ;P
