Before I begin, it is important to understand that the core focus of Anime Characters Database is being the best tool for identifying characters from images. Many side projects are realized as the database continues to grow, and many of them are completely unrelated to our core goal. Searching by clothing type is one of many examples. So let's get started!
Our development staff is working on a tool that will be made semi-public to help speed data entry. Before we release it, we'd like to know what clothing types you see in the database, and how you would like to shape our current list. All additions, simplifications, etc are welcome. |

there are a few things about that list to name off:
the "mini skirt" and "skirt" categories I believe could be put together, you also want to differentiate between a skirt and a school uniform because in anime and whatnot you'll see that most if not all of them use skirts in the female persuasion. Jacket and Winter jacket I believe could be put together as well. I think I see the difference you see but I believe that these two can be joined for simplicity purposes. Chinese Dress, Japanese Kimono and Traditional I can see some fuzziness from, at least I know the kimono is considered traditional wear in japanese culture. Fantasy seems a catch-all to me, you may want to have an explanation to that one if you have some specific idea of what that is. I can also see some fuzziness in the range of mechanic clothes, military uniform and pilot suit. For pilot suits I can see where you're coming from if you see something like from Planetes or Soukyuu no Fafner but in most cases I see pilots wearing their fatigues or casual clothes (at least in mecha animes). From what I've seen most military mechanics just use fatigues as their mechanic clothes, and in most animes, the people wearing "mechanic clothes" are in the military. so yeah, at least with the military uniform I can see the distinction between fatigues and dress uniforms but most people I think will see those three categories a little hazy. Complicatedness is desired, as with nearly 10,000 characters this type of search is aimed towards the people at mangarevolution.com who are looking for images of a very specific type of character.
Fantasy was a quick solution for clothing such as these Skirt (defined as half way down thigh) Mini Skirts (defined as less than halfway down thigh) Mechanic Uniform Kimono Japanese Kimono Chinese |

You could add "waitress" to the list of clothing types.
