Profile
Touma Kamijyo is a main male protagonist of Toaru Majutsu no Index and also a supporting character of Toaru Kagaku no Railgun. He is a 15-16 high school student in Academic City. He has been described by Tsukuyomi Komoe as a "naughty boy" in his younger days. During this time, Touma discovered his strange, supernatural ability which could negate supernatural powers, particularly other psychic powers of fellow espers in Academic City. His power is known as the "Imagine Breaker (幻想殺し Gensō Goroshi, lit. "Illusion Killer")".As the result of his Imagine Breaker negating his own luck, Touma is unfortunate and often bemoans his situation when confronting an unfortunate situation with his famous catchphrase: "Such misfortune!" However, regardless of his own misfortune Touma believes that he is not regretful for being unfortunate, and states that he rather be unfortunate and help people than be fortunate and be happy and not notice people who are suffering. He states that being unfortunate is his fortune and it would be the path that he continue to walk on.
Touma is the type that acts before he thinks. He is extremely impulsive and will go to great lengths to protect or help the person. This he does at great risk to himself, which typically results in him being hospitalized for several days after each confrontation. When fighting seriously against a particularly strong opponent, Touma would usually first declare that he'll "destroy that illusion" of theirs, before actually engaging.
Upon meeting the heroine of the series, Index, he loses his memories. Touma now seems to approach people with more caution, carefully choosing what emotion or mood to display when meeting someone he thinks he might know, lest they see through his ruse and exploit him in any way. He is a very caring and forgiving individual. Touma also bears no grudge on former enemies, and is willing to help them if they asked for it. His new found forgiving nature may seem to be his greatest downfall, but more often than not; his opponents are usually confused and surprised by his stance of pacifism.
Touma is only doing whatever he feels is right and is labelled "righteous" by other people impulsively. He is one who will follow what he believes regardless of what others try to convince him of. In addition, earlier Villian commented Touma is just like William Orville, someone who follows his own ideals no matter what. Though there are differences between the two: William is someone who stays true to his ideals and firmly believes it is the right path no matter what happens, and no matter who speaks against it; while Touma does not have set ideals and therefore can be manipulated into helping other people's plots. Even so, he works to correct his mistakes in order to bring a smile to everyone's face at the end of the road, no matter the cost he himself may have to pay.
Touma cares deeply for his friends, in particular Index. His former enemies ironically become his allies further down the track. His Imagine Breaker becomes a talking point within Academic City and the religious European churches alike and his power threatens the thin stability and balance of power between the organisations. At his side is Index, the keeper of the 103, 000 magical grimoires and various other magician allies. He also has the support of other powerful psychic espers, in particular Misaka Mikoto and to a very fragile extent; his former enemy, Accelerator.
His actions in the World War (World War III) are instrumental in the war's end as he defeats Fiamma of the Right and sacrifices himself by driving the 'Star of Bethlehem' into the Archangel Gabriel within Sasha Kruezhev. He intercepts Gabriel in the freezing waters of the Arctic Ocean and engages the Archangel, defeating him. During his fight, Touma has flashbacks of all the events he has been through from Index's incident that lead up to this point. At the end of the battle Kamijou Touma is stated to have, "Welcomed death once more", a second time that the series stated Kamijou Touma has died, with the first in the Index Arc after he lost his memories.
Later, Stiyl received the report Gabriel is defeated and the crisis averted, though none of the forces from the Magic Side has found life-signs in the Arctic Ocean that both Gabriel and Touma plunged into. Index who has managed to get up and stumble to where Stiyl is asked for Touma's whereabout - and none present could answer her question.
