Sol Badguy

Sol Badguy is the central, main and titular character of the Guilty Gear series. He is a bounty hunter and fights with fire magic and his oddly-rectangular shaped "Fireseal" sword. His eternal rivalry with Ky Kiske make the pair synonymous with the series. In truth, Sol Badguy is one of the founders of the Gear project and he himself is prototype Gear, the first, making him exempt from Justice's Gear command ability. Sol's real name is Frederick. He along with his former lover, Aria, now Justice and the series' antagonist, only known as "That Man" are responsible for creating and unleashing the Gears upon the world and ultimately the untimely demise of the Japanese people.

Sol Badguy now lives the rest of his immortal life (now being a Gear, Sol cannot age) roaming the world. He was once a Knight of the Holy Order and fought alongside Kliff, Ky Kiske and Testament. Sol invented the "Outage", a set of separate weapons that allowed the user to further enhance their magical aptitude and fight more effectively against the Gears. Only 3 are known to be active: Sol's "Fireseal", Ky's "Thunderseal" and Anji Mito's "Zessen" (Unparalleled Fans). It is also believed that A.B.A's "Flament Nagel" is also part of the Outrage set. As Order Sol, he fought many times with Kliff against Justice herself. He was never able to defeat her and blamed himself for her rampage and regretted ever initiating the Gear project. Sol knew he needed something stronger to battle Justice with and so he devised a plan.

Sol fled from the Order with the "Fireseal" and this incident was the catalyst of Sol's and Ky's rivalry. Since his dissension from the Holy Order and the end 100-years war, Sol has turned his attention to making a living through collecting bounties. However, during the first Guilty Gear he heard rumours of the possible resurrection of Justice. Knowing that his old foe could never be allowed to wreak havoc upon the human race, Sol entered the tournament. He was surprised to find the one responsible for Justice's return was his mentor's adopted son, Testament, who was now a Gear himself. Testament, having no sense of self, planned to sacrifice the blood of many fighters to resurrect Justice. Sol defeated Testament and in a twisted case of irony, Testament's blood was used as the last sacrifice. Justice returned, but was defeated by a much more experienced Sol and his "Fireseal" sword. In her final moments, she regained her true self, becoming Aria, briefly. She wished that Sol, "That Man" and herself could talk together once more and then took her final breath. Sol then made a solemn pledge to hunt down "That Man" unto his final days.

After the passing of Justice, the remaining Gears ceased to function. Testament regained his sense of self and mourned the loss of his adoptive father, Kliff, who had lost his life in the final battle with Justice. In the events of Guilty Gear X, Sol has learned of a new Command Gear with a 500,000 World-Dollar bounty place upon its head. The bounty is not what Sol hunted it down for, but the fact that it was another Command Gear. He once again battled Testament and won, leading to his confrontation with the new Command Gear, Dizzy. Dizzy stated that she only wanted to live, but Sol could not trust her words. They battled with Sol emerging the victor, but spared Dizzy's life because she had shown sincerity in her actions and words. He left an injured Dizzy to a sympathetic Ky Kiske, to which he then battled. Their battle of the clashing of swords and ideals was left as a stalemate and the two rivals went their separate ways.

Sol now faces a new antagonist in the form of I-no. Claiming to be a henchmen of "That Man", Sol now finds himself caught between the interests of various, different, opposing factions. One thing is clear for Sol: he must find "That Man" at all costs, and so he dedicates his efforts to tracking down I-no in hopes she will lead him to his enemy.

Sol Badguy is a relatively simple character to grasp, but is also difficult to master. Throughout the Guilty Gear series he has undergone numerous re-balances, moveset enhancements as well as many parameter changes. He still remains as a High-to-Mid tier character and has high damage output. Sol can be used as a rush down character, with many of his techniques being solid, fiery melee attacks. His signature Grand Viper and Volcanic Viper moves can start and end devastating combos respectively. His Bandit Revolver is used in many of his gatling combos but can leave him in an awkward position when used on its own. He has one type of projectile, his Gunflare technique, but has medium reach. His greatest asset is his medium-to-high priority moveset and "bread-and-butter" combos which can be used to inflict massive damage when instigated from a well placed hit.

Sol's most distinctive Overdrive is his "Dragon Install". Activating his Gear nature, Sol can drastically power up his offense and speed at the cost of lowering his already moderate defense to rather weak. Using this Overdrive tactically is paramount as the Dragon Install can be deactivated by being downed at any stage of it being active. Also, it has its own time limit of activation which can leave Sol momentarily vulnerable during the initiation of its cool down. His secondary Overdrives: Fenrir (a Force Break which leads to his original Tyrant Rave in Accent Core) and his Tyrant Rave Beta are straightforward is use as they inflict massive damage at close range, but can also be easily blocked. Although his combat style may be a simplistic rush down fighter, using his techniques strategically add an intricate element to Sol's gameplay.

Fun Fact: Sol Badguy is modeled after Freddie Mercury and to a greater extent, Queen. Sol's real name is Frederick, and Freddie's stage name was "Mr. Bad Guy".

Fun Fact: Guilty Gear series creator and designer Daisuke Ishiwatari's favourite band is Queen and is subsequently one of Sol's favourite things to listen to. Sol's theme song is "Keep Yourself Alive" a reference to a Queen song of the same name.

Ky Kiske

Ky Kiske is the eternal rival to Sol Badguy. Ky and the latter fought alongside one another during the Crusades, with Kliff Undersn and Testament. However, Sol’s deptaure with the Outrage weapon, the Fireseal sword, earned Sol Ky’s hatred. During the Crusades he was orphaned at the age of 10 and found by Kliff. He was then recommended to join the Holy Order to fight against the Gears, but to do so in 5 years time. Five years had passed and Ky, now 15, joined the Holy Order and in one years’ time, became one of the Order’s most decorated knights. With his promotion as the new Chief of the Holy Order, Ky was presented with the Thunderseal sword, one of the Order’s most sacred treasures. After his accomplishment, he went on to lead the Holy Order Knights to victory against the Gears and effectively ended the 100-year war.

After the Crusades had ended, the Holy Order was disbanded and Ky is now part of the Internation Police Force. He is a charismatic and pious individual. His strong sense of morals, virtues and justice makes him a role model for his subordinates. Ky’s devotion to God is unwavering and possesses a strong religious standpoint. Despite his good intentions, he is considered easily manipulated by those in higher positions of various, shadowy organisations who now control the world from behind the scenes. Ky’s strong-willed, religiously devout nature puts him at odds with Sol, which further fuels their rivalry.
In the events of Guilty Gear, he enters the tournament due to rumours of the possible ressurection of the Gear Commander, Justice. After Sol Badguy defeats Justice, Ky is compelled to strike the old enemy, but is compelled to do so. Justice then asks Ky to question is motives and what he truly calls “justice”. After Justice’s passing, Ky resolves to humour Justice’s last words and decides to do some soul-searching.

Guilty Gear X sees Ky entering the grove where rumour has it a new Gear Commander has been located. He finds a beaten Dizzy and offers to help her, rather than destroy her, as she is a Gear. Showing his ever helpful nature sparks relationship that would continue in subsequent installments of the series between Ky and Dizzy. He entrusts her to Johnny and May and returns to his duties in the IPF, still questioning his sense of justice.

Ky now delves into the shadowy organistation known as the “Post-War Administration Bureau” and finds a sinister plot that involves robotic clones of himself, a new antagonist by the name of I-no and the unravelling secrets behind the nature of his eternal rival, Sol Badguy. In the events of Accent Core Plus, he separates himself of the police force, but now firmly believes that his actions are true and just. He later runs into Dizzy yet again, and assists her in regaining control of herself and returning her to the Jellyfish pirates. Ky then continues to protect her, being the two closer together.
Guilty Gear 2: Overture sees Ky assume the position of king, reigning over the land of Illruyia, armed with a new blade as he is keeping his love sealed within his old sword to preserve her existence. Having grown much more mature and composed over the years, his rivalry and animosity towards Sol has diminished entirely, having entrusted his half-Gear son, Sin. Ky is shown at constant conflict towards his own ineptitude of being a father and a husband due to the racial issues regarding Gears.

Ky, next to Sol Badguy, is one of the most prolific characters in the series as well as being the second main character. He fights with straight-forward melee attacks, simplistic swordplay and lightning-based attacks. Using his Thunderseal sword, Ky and generate many different lightning projectiles to assault his opponents from a distance. Utilising his projectiles in conjunction with his swordplay is paramount to using Ky Kiske to devasting effect. His "bread and butter" gatling combos make him very easy and efficient to use in battle. His signature Overdrive, "Ride the Lightning" is a double-edged sword. It can be easily linked into combos, yet if the opponent does manage to block the move, it leaves Ky vulnerable to reversals. His Vapour Thrust has extremely high priority and a large arcing hit box and a staple for the majority of all Ky’s combos.

Fun Fact: The wife of Ky Kiske is Dizzy, the Maiden of the Grove. Their son is Sin, a half-Gear. One can find this ironic as Ky hunted and fought against Gears in the Crusades, yet he marries a Gear and his son is a Gear.

Dizzy

Dizzy is the introduced in Guilty Gear X as a mysterious Gear who was hidden away in a grove by her adoptive parents. Despite her matured appearance, Dizzy is only 3 years old (initially in Guilty Gear X). She is actually a half-human, half-Gear, offspring. Her Gear Cells have allowed her body to mature at a fast rate, hence her current appearance. Once the human of a neighboring village discovered Dizzy was a Gear, they hunted her relentlessly. She was then taken under Testament's wing and subsequently under his care and protection. Anyone who dared step into Dizzy's grove were beaten back by Testament.

A 500, 000 World Dollar bounty was placed upon her head by the Post-War Administration Bureau (PWAB) and bounty hunters from all over began their hunt for Dizzy. She was eventually beaten by Sol Badguy but her life was spared. Sol reluctant to take her life, he left the grove and left Dizzy in an injured and vulnerable state. She was then found by Ky Kiske, who offered to help her. Such kindness from a human was foreign to her. Ky handed her over to the Robin Hood-esque, Jellyfish Pirates, led by Johnny and May. Dizzy, now aboard the Mayship had found a place to call home, new friends and a new life. She would never forget the compassion that was shown her by Ky Kiske.

In Guilty Gear XX, she is assaulted by I-no while on the Mayship. She falls into a forest below and is subsequently possessed by Necro (her evil wing). Dizzy, under the influence of Necro, runs into various other characters and lays waste to them. She is eventually found and "cured" by Faust. In a state of despression and dismay, Dizzy wonders if she will ever be accepted back by her friends. Once more, Ky Kiske helps her back to Johnny and May, who welcome her back with open arms. Through this, her friendship with May and Johnny grows stronger, as does her rapport with Ky Kiske.

Dizzy is actually the daughter of Justice. The Command Gear from the first Guilty Gear and therefore, Dizzy is also a Command Gear. However, unlike her mother before her, Dizzy has no desire for conflict or bloodshed. In Guilty Gear 2, Dizzy has been confirmed as the wife of Ky Kiske and mother to Sin. She is referred to as "the Maiden of the Grove", as a frozen statue of her likeness is found within the grove.

Dizzy initially appears in Guilty Gear X and serves as its final boss character (as Justice was before her). She was later re-balanced and in later releases she was then a starting and tournament legal character. Dizzy possesses a rather obscure moveset, alternating between melee and projectile combat styles. Her wings, Necro (the evil wing) and Undine (the angelic wing) perform the majority of her Gear moves, her tail also has the ability to belt or clamp her opponents. Because of her relatively high damage output and range of moves, she was initially ranked a high tier character, but in subsequent revisions she has been re-balanced putting her at a much lower ranking than before.

Fun Fact: Dizzy comes with her own version of Gamma Ray (not to the extent of Justice's, but still very much devastating), but the movement input command is the exact opposite of Justice.

Fun Fact: Her normal mode has no Instant Kill, but her EX Mode comes with a new overdrive, "Michael Sword".

Fun Fact: Her Accent Core appearance equips Dizzy with a new Instant Kill, which is done by holding down, up, left, right, down, Punch + Heavy Slash.

Order Sol

Holy Order Sol is the past "version" of Sol Badguy when he was enlisted with the Holy Order Knights during the Crusades against Justice and the Gears. He sports the uniform of the Holy Order Knights, but with his preferred and well-known colour of red, and without the Fireseal sword (which he did not obtain until his desertion).

His story mode in Accent Core Plus, shows his final moments with his affiliation with the order. His confrontation with Justice ends in a stalemate. Unable to destroy Justice, Oder Sol is frustrated and realises he needs something stronger. He returns to the Order and steals the Fireseal sword of the "Outrage" weapon set. He is initially confronted by Ky and a battle ensues. Order Sol manages to escape and Ky is left beaten. This event sparks Ky's disdain for Sol and their eternal rivalry. He is then stopped by Kliff Undersn, who, much to Sol's surprise, allows him to leave stating he had planned to give the Fireseal to Sol from the beginning. Sol departs with the Fireseal, shedding the Holy Order garments and taking on his new identity, the bounty hunter, Sol Badguy.

Holy Order Sol possesses a variation of Sol Badguy's moveset. Oder Sol has incomplete, "prototype" incarnations of his future self's moves. Because he does not have the Fireseal sword to help refine his fire-based magic attacks, he relies on his unrefined Dragon Install to create extensions of his attacks. His Dragon Install can be charged up to 3 levels. Each level will determine how many hits and the type of extension attack will be performed when using a special move. His Overdrives are also influenced by the charge level. Order Sol uses a a type of Tyrant Rave, which involves the use of Fenrir if Order Sol has the right charge level. He also comes with Savage Fang, which is similar to his Sol Badguy's Gunflame, but to a much more devasting effect which is also influenced by the charge level. However, Order Sol's most distinctive and devasting Overdrive is his Dragon Install: Sakkai. Requiring Charge Level 3 and 100% tension to perform. It also involves complex button input which can create up to a 10 hit combo and deals immense damage. If the opponent is under 35-50% of health, the final hit will show Holy Order Sol transform into his gear form and perform Napalm Death as the finishing attack.
