Story
It is the end of the 20th century, and the 'Labor', a general-purpose humanoid heavy-duty machine born from rapid advances in robot engineering, has spread to all fields. In the capital city of Tokyo, countless Labors are in operation due to the massive demand created by the 'Babylon Project', a national project to build a large embankment in Tokyo Bay and reconstruct after the 1995 direct earthquake. However, the rapid spread of Labors has brought forth a new breed of societal threat: Labor-related accidents and crimes using Labors - 'Labor crimes'. In order to combat this, the Metropolitan Police Department established the Special Vehicle Section 2 within the security department of their head office.
Here, the 'Special Vehicle Section 2 Patrol Labor Squadron', commonly known as 'Patlabor', was born.
In addition, the Metropolitan Police Department decided to introduce a new model developed for police use, the Shinohara Heavy Industries AV-98 Ingram, to the Special Vehicle Section 2. At the same time, the decision was made to add a second division to operate the new model.
However, the ones assigned to the glorious Division 2 are,
Kiichi Gotou, the inattentive captain with athlete's foot, who you can never tell what's on his mind
Noa Izumi, the pilot of Unit 1, who's passionate about machines, but is completely unfamiliar with software
Asuma Shinohara, the sarcastic commander of Unit 1 and the son of the head of a major Labor production company
Isao Oota, the pilot of Unit 2: a formally-trained police officer, yet rude and trigger-happy
Mikiyasu Shinshi, a timid ex-salaryman who is the only married man in the group and who can't live without stomach medicine
Hiromi Yamazaki, a tragic giant who can't board the Labor because of his size
Kanuka Clancy, a cool beauty who is actually more dangerous than Oota
Takeo Kumagami, an outstanding police officer with an unusual past
At best, they are rich in personality―― at worst, not a single one of them are what you would expect for a proper police officer. Will they become the elite, or a bunch of hooligans out on their own―― The story of the activities of the troubled Special Vehicle Section 2 Division 2 has now begun.
