Mitsugu Mouryou’s Anime Review
Sekirei… I enjoyed it thoroughly; in fact, I had to watch it straight through twice. I only have 2 big complaints about the whole series, so I’ll get the ugly one out of the way first: Gainaxing… It’s awful! Lady parts aren’t shaped that way, and if they move like that those poor women would be in great pain!
Good thing it’s mostly limited to Musubi and Kazehana. (the 2nd is coming in my review of Pure Engagement)
I always liked the concept of a dork/geek inexplicably falling into a situation where he is surrounded by beautiful women… as long he’s not a jerk of course. Sekirei is a great example of this, quite literally; only the beautiful woman fell from the sky landing on his head.
This series just about has it all: great character design; tragedy; light romance; classic anime comedy; epic battles by angry women with super powers; mixing of opposites; and a main antagonist that you just love to hate.
Aside from the opening theme being overly happy and the closing petty excuse for hip-hop, the OST consists of interstitial musical cues that are qite applicable to the mood.
in Sekirei is quite well done (EN&JP), as a first, I have to admit that the EN vers of Tsukiumi is far superior to the JP dialog. This must be due to her ‘ye olde English’ style of speech.
Since I’ve now watched it a 3rd time, and will probably again, I must give Sekirie a 7.2 (out of 10). With violence, very little blood, a good deal of nudity, and some foul langue (in the JP vers only), the Sekirei Series makes my top 20 all time favorite anime list. Great background noise, but with only 12.2 episodes (12 eps+ a 10min OVA) it’s a little on the short side or else It would receive a higher rating.
