Franken Stein

Doctor Franken Stein (フランケン・シュタイン, Furanken Shutain) is the man that changes Sid into a zombie. He is based on the central characters from Mary Shelley's novel Frankenstein, an amalgamation of the mad scientist and Frankenstein's monster itself. He was the most powerful meister to ever graduate from Shibusen.

Being a man of science, Dr. Stein sees everything in the world, including himself, as an experiment or specimen. This is the personality that he had as a child, as he often wanted to dissect the people around him. He was often stopped by Spirit. This personality trait made all those around him afraid of him. This strange hobby of wanting to dissect anything he thinks is interesting was still present, even when Stein became an adult, and once as part of a lesson, tried to have his class dissect an endangered animal, claiming that it would be bad if he did not find out anything from it before it became extinct. Stitching across his face suggests that he had worked on himself at one point.

He also exhibits a sadistic and intimidating personality. During his battle against Maka and Black Star, he would grab Maka by one of her ponytails, lift her shirt up and marks on her body, to signify where he would put the knife through, and thinks where he whether he should turn her skin into sandpaper. When Black Star tried to attack him, he countered by knocking Black Star out in a seemingly painful and bloody manner that made it seem as though he was killed. His smiles are normally filled with sadistic and dark intentions.

Stein seems to have dormant insanity. He has even admitted that he is especially sensitive to it. Medusa even stated that he is prone to insanity and a simple push was enough to drive it to surface. Stein ultimately did go insane and struggled to maintain it. He even quit smoking as a way convince himself. When struggling to maintain his madness, his personality was shown to make a drastic change, especially from his naturally curious personality to someone who did not care at all for the ongoing investigation at that time. He would soon lock himself up in his house when he was suspected and was even unsure of himself on whether he actually did kill BJ, even after he had locked himself up.

He has a habit of smoking to the point that he is seen with one in nearly all his appearances outside of battle. He even smokes a specific brand of cigarette. The lady he buys them from imports them just for him. His propensity to smoke was used against him when Spirit and the rest suspected that he killed BJ, purely due to the fact that a cigarette brand he smokes was at the crime scene and he smelled of cigarette. When he went insane, he stopped smoking because he believed he would not be able to stand his madness if he could not stand against his habit.

Emotionally, Nygus has described him as always alone and that he has no love in him. He has admitted that he can't understand Spirit's reaction to Maka asking him to go out shopping. This shows he can't feel deep emotions other than the need to dissect whatever interests or irritates him. This tendency likely seems to be more destructive or psychotic, which explains his dormant madness. He has shown to be a bit morally bankrupt, at least back in his youth. In Sid's flashback, he questioned Sid's decision to adopt Black Star, who was a baby. This suggests that if it were Stein's decision, he would have left Black Star. His immorality is supported further by his repeated experiments on Spirit back when they were kids.

Despite this cruel and twisted personality, Stein does have a kind and compassionate side that worries for the people around him and he feels the need to protect them. He also exhibits a rather paternal demeanor towards his students. He also expressed deep disgust and moral outrage towards Medusa for regarding Crona as nothing but refuse and research material. It is never stated when this other personality arose, it could be assumed it happened after Spirit left him and went with Kami.

Lord Death

Shinigami (死神; Literally meaning "death god"), referred to with the suffix -sama as a term of respect, and formerly known as "Death" (デス, Desu) is the Shinigami himself (the Grim Reaper in Western legends). He is also called 'honorable father' (父上, chichiue) by his son, Death the Kid. Shinigami sealed the first Kishin Asura under Shibusen and rooted his own soul to Death City to keep him sealed, which is why he cannot leave Death City.

In most cases, Shinigami comes off as a bit of a joker with a cheerful demeanor. He also prefers to be optimistic and treats every situation as such. He also has a great sense of humor.

He has a special move called a "Direct Noggin Shinigami Chop" (which is normally shown when Shinigami shows his large flat four-fingered hand appearing from his robe; often called Shinigami Chop for short). This move is normally administered on Spirit whenever Shinigami refuses to put up with Death Scythe's antics when it comes to Maka or her progress. He has a habit of giving warnings to people about to be punished with it after the punishment was carried out. He also seems to take on a more playful attitude when talking with his son (he says the stripes in his son's hair are cute), but at the same time thinks he can be quite the handful and is glad that Patti and Liz look after him.

As the headmaster of Shibusen, he is highly respected by teachers as well as students, not only because of his great power, but for his desire for peace in the world. It is for this reason, that Shibusen was created. Despite his past and his powerful position in the school, he tends to be kiddish and joyful as to not to scare the children. In the past, Shinigami spoke in a deeper and far scarier tone and was far more violent than he is today (this can be seen when he was fighting Asura) . Also, his new personality is the complete opposite of his own son.

Medusa Gorgon

Medusa Gorgon (メデューサ・ゴーゴン, Medyūsa Gōgon) the main antagonist in the series. She is Crona's mother and a Witch with Snakes as her theme.

Medusa is both a very manipulative and deceptive person, much like the snake is commonly depicted as in various beliefs. Similarly to Dr. Stein, she sees everyone and everything as an experiment but she is also willing to use anyone and everyone to further her plans by any means necessary, even to the extent of subjecting her own child to grueling research activities.

While in disguise as Shibusen's school nurse, she acts like a very supportive person to conceal her true nature, completely fooling all those who came into contact with her.

It is later revealed by Arachne that she has a crush on Dr. Stein for numerous years, which she claims is simply due to his considerable creativity.

Maka Albarn

Maka Albarn (マカ=アルバーン, Maka Arubān) is Soul Eater Evans' Meister. As such, she stands out as the female protagonist and the main Meister in the story. Of all the main characters, she is the most normal and civilized of the group, which provides a significant balance to the other main characters. Presently, she is a Two-Star Meister and a creator of a Death Scythe. She is a member of the elite unit, Spartoi.

As the daughter of the current Death Scythe and his former Meister, she has high expectations of herself. She idolizes her mother and as a result dislikes her disloyal father(as shown in the anime when she was speaking with Crona and strangely enough, said that her favorite memory of her mother was when she asked Spirit for a divorce, the reason being that she admired her mother's strong will).

She likes reading books and doing puzzles, and frequently studies to remain as a model student. She is often seen carrying a book, and seems that she has always one on her person as she can use her Maka Chop at any time. She relies a lot on books to help her understand things, and is sometimes teased by Soul, who calls her a bookworm. She seems to prefer to stay in the house and read or study, emphasized by her lack of ability to play games such as basketball (despite her athleticism), as she does not know the rules. She is also stubborn, foolhardy, gloomy-natured and is quick to resort to violence, according to Soul, at least.

Maka is bright, cheerful, direct and confident, in contrast to Soul, but can also be stubborn, short-tempered, competitive and can sometimes let her emotions get the better of her and she sometimes forgets to take into consideration of other people's feelings, which sometimes results in conflict with her peers, like the times when she argues with Soul and later has a fight with Black Star. She is enthusiastic, but sometimes takes her enthusiasm too far and can be demanding at times. However, overtime, she can admit to her mistakes and is kind and caring to her friends, and will not hesitate to do anything to help them, although she also won't hesitate to put them in line if they do something inappropriate. She is mostly known for her courage, and she is willing to throw herself at any enemy, no matter how strong they are, and she also retains a cool demeanour even when Giriko tries to intimidate her. She also has a sense of honour, shown when she tells Black Star to punch her since she punched him some time ago.

Although Maka is usually confident in herself, she can be extremely sensitive when someone scorns her abilities, and she often falls into a depression and questions on how weak she is. She admits that she is considerably weaker than Kid or Black Star. Likewise, she is also easily flattered. Nevertheless, she still fights with all of her strength and furiously attacks anyone who hurts her friends.

In battle, her determination knows no bounds, and she faces an enemy no matter how strong they are. She also displays an almost frightening ferocity and drive in battle, not afraid of punching her opponents directly in the face (which she does quite often). In her fight with Free, she even headbutts her Weapon in order to push the blade into the werewolf, and she even rushes at an enemy when she doesn't have a Weapon. Her temper is amplified in battle, and it is not unusual for her to shout and curse when something goes wrong. She used to prefer the logical approach to fights, wanting to have a proper plan of what to do in a battle. However, as the series progresses, she becomes more reckless and starts diving into battles without any plan, preferring to simply give it her all in the situation.

Maka also holds deep respect for her superiors like Stein and Shinigami, and usually never hesitates in obeying orders from Shibusen. In fact, she does not even kill Gopher for trying to assassinate her, as he is not on Shinigami's wanted list. She likes to consider herself as a model student, and abides by the rules of Shibusen and displays great politeness to her superiors. She sometimes recites the DWMA rules from memory, throwing even Shinigami himself. However, deep down, she is shown to be torn at times when she is not sure whether to obey Shibusen or go her own way. This is shown more in the anime, when Maka becomes frustrated whether or not to follow Shibusen, or go and help Crona and Marie save Stein. However, after Soul persuades her to do what she wants to do for a change, Maka proves herself to be incredibly driven, up until the point she completely ignores rules and regulations, attacking Medusa even though she knows that Shibusen had promised not to harm her. She later admits to Asura that although she tries to obey rules and orders, in the end, she is not really that good at it and prefers going her own way. In the manga, she also breaks school rules by using her father's ID in checking out forbidden books from the Library, although she sincerely apologizes for this.

When her gender changes in the Lust chapter in the book of Eibon, her personality slightly alters to match more of a male character. Although her seriousness remains, she also becomes more critical and sombre. One of her great changes in her personality though is her new weakness towards women, a lot like Soul's weakness towards women, shown when she starts to have an uncontrollable nosebleed upon meeting the Succubus. However, her original personality returns upon leaving the chapter.

Maka seems to be annoyed at the fact that her body has not developed yet (which is the center of some jokes in the series) and is even more annoyed when people tease her about it. When being told of her Grigori Soul, she gets a strong desire to become an 'angel-like' figure, and is annoyed as Soul doesn't agree with this. She has a tendency to have zero-tolerance to some of Soul's undesirable behavior, usually hitting him with a Maka Chop if he does something perverted (even if he is not the instigator. Namely, he often receives Maka Chops if Blair presses herself on him). She can be quite violent when needs arise. Overall, she seems to dislike men because of their disloyalty and perverted ways towards women. This dislike stems from her father's actions.

Dr. Stein saw her soul and told her she was a "serious person who tries hard." Since she is quite serious, she is often dismayed by the other's immature behaviour.

Her father is Shinigami-sama's current Death Scythe. Maka acts as if she hates her father (as she has caught him constantly flirting with other women) but she still loves him very much. Her mother was a Scythe Meister, as well, at one point wielding Maka's father as her own Weapon; Maka's mother, Kami, and Spirit, Maka's father, are divorced one month prior to the series.

Seeing that Maka changed quite quickly back to her original gender in the Book of Eibon, it is revealed that she is not that lustful, befitting her serious nature and dislike towards men in general.

Excalibur

Excalibur (エクスカリバー, Ekusukaribā) was the name given to the legendary sword used by heroes and kings. It has a great power that is unrivaled by any other weapon present within the series continuity.

Despite being classified amongst the other demon weapons within existence in regards to its properties, Excalibur does not conform to the typical limitations of its brethren, as it turns out that in actuality anyone is capable of wielding him. However; in stark contradiction to this unique trait the number of people counted as his partner over the various centuries remains very few, due solely to the fact that no person is able to withstand his personality for extended periods of time, as he is regarded as having a bigger ego than Black Star which is only further exacerbated by an even shorter temper. It is for this reason alone that those who are able to use Excalibur are referred to using titles such as "hero" and "king", as only they possess the strength of will to put up with his numerous annoying habits, such as a list of one thousand things he demands to be completed daily, long enough to achieve something meaningful with him.

Due to Excalibur's dysfunctional personality, he holds himself in the highest regards at all times resulting in his most commonly used word being "fool" (baka), which is often employed to cut off anything that anyone else is saying while simultaneously putting them down.

Spirit Albarn (Death Scythe)

Death Scythe (デス・サイズ, Desu Saizu), formerly Spirit (スピリット, Supiritto) is Shinigami-sama's current weapon and Maka's father, formerly known as Spirit (still called by a few people, including Shinigami and Stein).

He is very protective and supportive of Maka and is always prepared to jump to her aid any time she is in trouble but he is always stopped by Shinigami. His wife, Kami, is Maka's mother, but they divorced one month prior to the start of the story due to his constant flirting with other women. Even though he visits clubs, he is still insanely loyal to both his daughter and ex-wife (who he refers to as "Mama"). He usually runs yelling about how much he loves Maka.

He is extremely sad that his daughter appears to hate him (often times, she regresses and shows hints of truly loving her father), but he still tries to be a good father by looking out for her in his own unusual and unique silly way. Spirit is consistently shown to be a warm, caring, sensitive, and kind-hearted man.

Aside from his love for Maka, he is compassionate towards children in general, as shown when he wept in anger for Medusa's casual abandonment of Crona, her own child, which he claimed was a common sympathy felt for children by fathers.

Crona

Crona (クロナ, Kurona; Literally meaning "Dark One") is the first reoccurring antagonist of Soul Eater. The child of Medusa Gorgon, Crona is a Demon Sword Master whose weapon, Ragnarok, resides permanently within his/her blood. Crona was Medusa's first attempt at creating a Kishin, but instead of turning into a Demon god, Crona instead turned to help Shibusen defeat Medusa and ultimately, the Kishin. Crona is presented with an ambiguous gender throughout the entire series and while there have been hints toward Crona's sex in both directions, nothing definitive has been presented.

Blair

Blair (ブレア, Burea) is a cat in the series. She has strong magical skills, however, she has stated explicitly that she is not a true witch.

Blair is very good at understanding other people. She is always looking for some fun, whether it is harmless or not. Playful and fun-loving, she is quite an affable person, She is well endowed, which is used when she flirts with Soul usually by appearing out of her cat form in little to no clothing.

Black Star

Black☆Star (ブラック☆スター, Burakku☆Sutā) is one of the three main meisters that the series follows. He is the raw strength of the trio and is supposedly around thirteen years old at the start of the series. Black Star is the only survivor of the infamous Star Clan, which explains the star on his shoulder. He is partnered with Tsubaki Nakatsukasa.

Despite his ninja style background, he prefers to forgets the Assassins Code by shouting and making his presence known. Black Star seems to exhibit some form of superiority complex, due to his undying need to be known as number one. His delusion of stardom is so great that he constantly gives out autographs that nobody wants. Black Star hates it when someone gets more attention than him and will show them who the real star is. In fact, according to Dr. Stein, Black Star's soul is described as "a terribly self-absorbed soul." Black Star's favorite quote is "I will be the man who will surpass God" (which he actually is trying to do according to Stein), and Black Star's favorite number is 1, what he considers himself to be. When referring to himself, Black Star uses Ore-sama, which shows he holds himself with high regard. His hubris does not allow him to take insults on his abilities, such as when Nygus reminded him that he is human and was once tacitly envious of Kid's god-like body, which also exhibits some form of inferiority complex.

All of his methods of going about solving anything are generally headstrong and dependent on physical strength, just like Soul. From time to time, he will abandon Tsubaki if she tells him to hold back or run away, which ends him up in a worse situation. This might come from people mostly seeing him as a member of the Star Clan and judging him for their actions rather than his own. He fights with honor and will do what it takes to defend or restore respect to any fallen friends. He will risk himself and put himself beyond his own limits to follow his own path.

He is seen training a lot and despite trying really hard, he always fails at tests of intellect regardless of the significant amount of time he spends studying. He is also anything but a quitter. Mifune is a prominent figure in Black Star's personality, and has had a profound effect on him. His first confrontation with Mifune revealed that Black Star would rather not take credit he does not deserve. Even after defeating Mifune, he spared his life and the life of the witch Angela, which equated to 99 souls and 1 witch soul, respectively. His final battle against Mifune changed Black Star dramatically. He now follows his own distinct path, separate from the path his father once tread. After the match, he has admitted that he is beginning to mature past his egotism, and is noticeably more cool-headed and less arrogant, although his pride still remains. He also stops comparing himself to God, and now instead seeks to become a 'Bushin.' He also has more focus in battle, making him a formidable opponent.

Asura

Asura (阿修羅, Ashura) is the strongest and most dangerous antagonist in Soul Eater. He was the first Kishin to ever come into existence.

Asura was a human said to have always possessed an extremely careful soul, this resulted in making him mistrustful of everyone around him, which is the primary reason why he covered his body with ridiculous amounts of clothing. However, despite all his immense power, he was persistently terrified with the greatest fear that was possible. So; in order to protect himself, he became obsessed with power and forgetting all discipline, began eating the souls of innocents who were not listed by Shinigami. This fear eventually drove him to consume even his own weapon partner, causing him to go mad and become the first Kishin.

As the physical embodiment of madness, Asura's behavior is entirely erratic; one minute he seemingly has a completely calm and cool demeanor, the next he is both maniacal and senseless.
